First let’s start with the question. What is CES? CES, or Consumer Electronics Show, is the world’s gathering place for all who thrive on the business of consumer technologies. Held in Las Vegas every year, it has served as the proving ground for innovators and breakthrough technologies for more than 40 years—the global stage where next-generation innovations are introduced to the marketplace. (As the description on their site states nicely.) So…now that you know what it is why don’t we just get right into it. What was there? lol. (What was worth mentioning anyways. Some were announced before the show.)

Faraday Future FFZero1 Concept Car

The FFZero1 concept is a sleek single-seat all-electric sports car that could, produce as much as 1,000 horsepower. The car itself it seems is more concept than reality and it gives little clue as to what Faraday’s first production car will look like. The actual car which they say may go on sale in two years is not going to be the FFZero1.The concept car itself does throw a small look at how its cars may look. The FFZero1 is based on a flexible chassis that can be made longer or shorter to include a varying number of battery packs (and thus different sized cars). The chassis is designed to accept from one to four electric motors, creating cars that are two-wheel or four-wheel drive. The word modular is thrown out there to describe it.
Richard Kim, head of design for Faraday Future says about the vehicle:

“You don’t have to sacrifice anything for being sustainable.”

“This is a 100% sustainable, electric, non-polluting vehicle, and it can be as dynamic as 1,000 horsepower.”

“increasing levels of autonomy”

Kim worked for BMW in the past where he helped designed the i3 and i8 plug-in cars. Faraday has also hired engineers and designers from companies like Tesla Motors (TSLA) and Ferrari.
Faraday is promising to eventually build fully self-driving cars. The company, backed by Chinese investors, plans to build cars in a new Nevada factory. Nice looking car I guess. It has a bit of a Batmobile thing going for it. I wonder what the first production car will look like. Probably an updated Geo Metro style type car. Just have to wait and see.

Nvidia Drive PX 2

Nvidia has been developing a new computer for cars they are calling the Drive PX2, a follow-up to a previous years’ project. This thing’s processing power is supposedly equivalent to 150 MacBook Pros while sitting in a small sized computer. It has 12 CPU cores that support a combined eight teraflops and 24 deep learning tera operations per second. It is also water-cooled, which is really cool sounding to me.

It probably does not make any sense to some but for a properly-designed self driving car to work correctly in all situations the computer needs to have a ton of processing power so it can handle all the controls, sensors, and learning it needs to be fully autonomous without needing any internet access. Nvidia says the PX2 can “process the inputs of 12 video cameras, plus lidar, radar and ultrasonic sensors.”

Volvo will be Nvidia’s first partner to use the Drive PX2. If it works or rather what is different about it that says it will when compared to what has already been you will have to listen to in the video.

Supposedly Nvidia has created a testing stage platform called the “Nvidia Drivenet” and it is already testing its own self-driving cars. The computer can train itself to “perceive things out in the world.” Huang said it took just a few months for the network to recognize objects in real time. It’s not a new idea bit Nvidia claims it has made some big moves in recent months.

Nvidia is also working with other companies like Audi, Daimler, Ford, and BMW to test its systems. I heard the words to explain the progress as being able to read German road signs “better than a human can.” Eitherway big things are happening as the Star Trek movie comes to life in everyday life.

Zhor-Tech Digitsole Smartshoe

Okay this next one isn’t that new an idea. I assume we all seen the Back to the Future movie and the cool kicks Marty McFly wore. Well a company by the name of Digitsole has unveiled a pair of trainers that automatically tighten on your feet. These shoes can also heat up. These shoes being called “the world’s first intelligent footwear” can count calories and distanced travelled. From the image you can see how different they look lacking the normal look you may be used to having a sporty car look with no laces. The shoes tighten and loosen at the touch of a button on a phone app. The app can also control the temperature of the shoe making the shoes at warm as 100 degree farenheit (38 degrees Celsius). This detail though I got from the Mashable site. The shoe has a thermostat (really?) which will control the temps keeping them within a certain range.

The shoe is made out of Neotech, a specially designed lightweight material which is layered having ‘Ortholite’, with shock absorbing traits. The battery is said to last between 8 hours to several days depending on usage patterns and is charged with a micro-usb charger. Oh almost forgot the shoe will be able to tell you when the soles have worn out and when to replace the trainers. That could get annoying you think? If someone bought these things and used them do you think people will listen to the warning? I can see myself wearing these things out and I would be getting that warning for a year or two before I just simply toss them out and buy a pair of inexpensive Jordans. (Like that is gonna happen…)

If you don’t like this shoe the company is planning to release more casual and fashionable shoes which will have the the tracking and warming features also. In the images I have included some images of those. You will notice that for women a pump shoe is in there. The insoles themselves are available and go for about $200. Although they are not an easy find. Their site currently lists them as unavailable but you can preorder them from that site through their SquareUp store. As for the aformentioned shoe, the SmartShoe 01, it will launch in the U.S. in around September for a whopping $450. Looks like I will settle for the Jordans…. ha ha.
