Hello everyone we all know the american horror Friday the 13th with that bad ass slasher Jason Voorhees, that boy that drowned at Camp Crystal Lake due to stupid camp counselors. The movie itself has gone on to make 12 parts to the story starting from Friday the 13th in 1980 to Friday the 13th in 2009 which is a reboot of the film. Crazy thing is the films were not popular with critics, yet they are considered one of the most successful franchises in America. It is on halloween where Jason Voorhees lives on as people opt to dress up as the infamous Jason Voorhees. He does make a great costume doesn’t he?
So why talk about Jason Voorhees on a techy/gaming site? Jason Voorhees lives on in games and has made several appearances. Jason’s first appearence was in 1985’s Friday the 13th game for the Commodore 64. The game idea was simple: you play one person in a group of people who is to find a safe place for the whole group. One of part of the game was to find a safe spot. This part you grab an item, the Sanctuary Cross and dropped in any location. Once you did that you had to run around the map to find and convince people to come to it while being stalked by Jason. You could also just attack all the survivors and go for Jason himself. In the game Jason could also be one of the survivors but disguised. The game did not do too well but will more work I really think it could have been great.
Jason’s next appearance, in 1989’s Friday the 13th for the NES, was…… well rather bad I would say. Okay you are a camp counselor (Jason really wants you now) and you have to find and beat Jason before he kills all of the counselors and children. When a counselor was attacked you could switch and control the attacked counselor in an effort to survive. Alot of the game though tediously moving through a map and killing zombies and bats before Jason even appears. Killing Jason was a terror itself and most of the game just had nothing to do with movie. Oh wait, Jason is in it…
On a third appearance, Jason showed up on cellphones in a 2D slasher style game. Not much really to say about it. This was about 2006 and I have never actually played this game. I heard about it. I believe this is the game in this video that I am posting. Back then I would think any phone games were based on java so. This is where the last officially licensed games that follow the franchise end. Friday the 13th has a large fanbase and you can find other games made by these fans as a way to inspire new games to come out. One called Friday the 13th 3D by JC Powell (the poster of the video is a little silly) lets you run around as Jason killing camp-goers. You find different weapons along the way that you can use to kill as well as power ups. The point is simply to kill which get boring rather quickly without new things to kill. There is not even a score so no going for that highest score in this one but the map is huge and you can find easter eggs along the way for the fans. So the game’s point becomes killing and finding those easter eggs. I would also like to mention that during my search I found another Friday the 13th 3D game by Havoc. I’ll just let you view the video for that one since the storylines for the games are basically the same.
Another fan game, which was well received, called Terrordrome was a fighting game filled with movie characters like Leatherface, the Candyman, and Jason. You can download this game and play for free. I am not sure about support for the game and with new versions of windows out you never know how or if it will run on your computer. You can go here to check it out.
I have to also mention another game. I remember this game as a kid and I used to hit the neighborhood store to play it all the time. This game was called Splatterhouse. Yeah, all you gamers know this game. Now this is not Jason but you play as a guy named Rick who is trapped in the West Mansion. He is resurrected by the Terror Mask and you go through the mansion fighting your way through in an attempt to save his girlfriend. This game was fun to play actually. The game has been ported to several different systems and a part two and 3 was made. The game is mainly a sidescrolling beatem up game but there is a more 3D version out there which was made for the XBox 360 and the PS3. I think it is really cool cause I will now venture into playing those however way I can on my computer. As I was researching things I found all of this. I knew about and played part one but the rest I remember hearing about but never played them. (After today though I will…trust.)
Warning this video has graphic violence!!!
The coolest part about all of this is Jason in his latest appearance is now in Mortal Combat X. I love what they did with him in this game. Mortal Combat has always been a good game (Can’t say that totally about the movie.) and is still an awesome game. You just have to see this one and they continue to add more characters to the game.
Finally there is a game called Summer Camp. When the game was announced it was automatically assumed to be a homage to Friday the 13th. So much so the makers even got Friday the 13th vets to work on the game like Tom Savini, Kane Hodder, and Harry Manfredini. The game caught peoples attention and recently the game has changed is name. The game is now called Friday the 13th now because Sean S. Cunningham gave them access to the license. I am not sure of details but this makes it an official Friday the 13th game which is set to release this month. The game will be a third-person horror, survival game where you will be able to play as a teen counselor or as Jason himself. This sounds really cool me but will it do well? The Friday the 13th franchise has a large following and I think avid movie freaks who are not even gamers may try this out. We will see…..enjoy the video. If you like the idea and wanna help out and donate. You can do that by going here.
Since it was made official the game had been pushed back for the building of the game. The creator have since created a Kickstarter and Backerkit fund and as of this post date have raised about $937, 998. The current goal being $950,000. You can currently pre-order the game for $60. The expected delivery date currently is Oct 2016 so it seems you will be able to play some Jason Voorhees goodness (more badness really) soon.
